‘Cyprus belongs to its people’

Friends,
AGIOS wants to inform you about the problem of his country, Cyprus. It is my duty to tell you something about the fortune of my country, because we want your help in order to find a workable and viable solution to our national problem. I believe that the power of mind and dream and the strength of juvenescence play a crucial role in the vivification of justice and freedom all over the world. This freedom is not something abstract and invisible. Conversely, it is an internal procedure. First and foremost, we must ensure our inward liberty. The liberty of mind and thought.

Short history of Cyprus Problem

Using as a pretext the coup of 15 July 1974, Turkey invaded Cyprus allegedly as a "guarantor" of the island's independence but with the sole aim of destroying it. On 20 July 1974, 40.000 Turkish troops landed on the island assisted by Turkish air and naval forces, in violation of the U.N. Charter and all principles governing international relations as well as her own contractual obligations. On 14 August, Turkey launched a second invasion in violation of the Security Council resolutions calling for a cease-fire and troop withdrawal, and of the agreements it signed at Geneva. As a result, approximately 40% of the total territory of the Republic of Cyprus, which in economic terms is much more significant than its size (accounting for 70% of the economic potential), came under Turkish military occupation and about 40% of the total Greek Cypriot population was displaced. Moreover, thousands of people, including civilians, were killed or ill-treated and many more disappeared and are still missing. Turkey also pursued a deliberate policy aimed at turkifying the occupied areas and at destroying the cultural heritage of Cyprus. On 15 November 1983, Mr. Denktash, the Turkey Cypriot leader, declared a separate "state" which he named the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" ("T.R.N.C."). While Turkey feigned surprise at this secessionist move, it promptly recognised the "new state" and pledged to assist it. The Turkish Cypriot leadership's unlawful action, however, provoked universal condemnation and the international community unequivocally declared that there was no question of recognition.
It has become apparent and it can be confirmed through the statements of Turkish officials as well as statements made by the President of Turkey himself, that the aim of the Turkish side is the creation of two separate states in Cyprus and not reunification. Despite persistent efforts by Ankara and its subordinate local administration in the occupied areas, no country, other than the occupying power, recognizes this illegal entity, in full compliance with the binding resolutions of the Security Council. A solution can only be functional and viable if it serves the interests of all Cypriots, restores human rights and reverses the faits accomplis created by the illegal Turkish invasion. The substance of the Cyprus issue is that the invasion and the occupation contravene international law… Turkey is attempting in every possible way to prevent a settlement reunifying the island.
A prerequisite to re-unification is ridding the island of the Turkish occupation and any martial foreign presence. This is the most important thing and it should be for the entire Cypriot people. Thus, the international community must exert pressure on Turkey so that it can no longer hide behind the Turkish Cypriot ‘yes’ in the (Annan plan) referendums and so-called isolation to block progress.
